Lake of the Ozarks History

The Casablanca building was constructed back in the late 20's and became the best bar at the Lake of the Ozarks in the 30's - so if anyone knows about Lake of the Ozarks history, it's the oldest bar at the Lake of the Ozarks! The Lake of the Ozarks has been a vacation destination for years and years, but just two years ago we were voted THE vacation destination in the country by USA Today! When you're looking for a place to travel that is filled with fun, water activities, great music, and even better food - you come to the Lake of the Ozarks. Our family-friendly destination has seen a lot in the last hundred years, so we want to talk about a bit of history trivia for the area.

Bagnell Dam History

The Bagnell Dam construction project began on August 6th, 1929 by the Union Electric Company of St. Louis Missouri. It was called the Great Osage River Project and was considered the most skillful engineering feat of its day. Yet, only four months after the project began, the stock market crashed. The mammoth Bagnell undertaking continued on, though, and it brought growth and expansion to central Missouri. Some 4,600 workers were employed at one time, among 20,500 total individuals over two years.

About Bagnell Dam

Once the area was cleared, the reservoir was outlined, and the Osage River was impounded and the lake began to fill on February 2, 1931. The lake was opened to travel on May 30th, 1931. The lake reservoir covers 92 square miles which is around 54,000 acres. 30,000 of those acres were cleared to complete the project.

Fun Facts About the Lake

  • At roughly 1,150 miles, the total shoreline of the Lake of the Ozarks is longer than the coastline of California.
  • Roughly 3.5 million tourists visit Lake of the Ozarks from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
  • Lake of the Ozarks covers 61,000 acres and contains 617 billion gallons of fresh water, what the city of St. Louis typically uses over a decade.
  • At 17,741 acres, Lake of the Ozarks State Park is the largest park in Missouri.
  • The total cost to build Bagnell Dam was approximately $30 million (nearly $360 million in today's money). The lake runs 92 miles end to end.

Hoagies VS. Grinders

Hoagies vs. Grinders. Have you ever gotten into a debate about these terms? While they aren't Midwest terminologies (so you may not have actually argued about them before) they have a definite story and history behind each one, and may actually be different sandwiches entirely. Here at Casablanca, we serve both, and we wanted to take the mystery out of them for you! Before you come out to your favorite restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks, here are a few things to remember about a hoagie and a grinder.

The Hoagie History

There are actually many theories describing where the term "hoagie" comes from. Some refer to an Irish man named Hogan who asked his wife to make him a sandwich similar to the ones that the Italians ate, while others surmise that eating one made you look like a hog - eventually converting to "hoagie." The most believable story though, surmises that the Italian Americans who worked on Hog Island making ships would take sandwiches stacked with cheese and meat on long round buns. These individuals were called "hoggies" because of their employment, and eventually, the sandwich earned the name as well. Due to the dialect of the Philadelphia accent, it then because known as the "hoagie."

What sets the hoagie apart from its counterparts? Well, it comes from Italian origins and is generally served as a cold sandwich. It is stacked high with cold cuts like salami, ham, and turkey, and is known for coming in ultra long lengths.

At Casablanca, we boast of brick-oven-baked hoagies, and we put our own spin on this popular sandwich that is packed with flavor. Each includes our legendary cheese blend, Roma tomatoes, caramelized onions, Aioli sauce & a bag of chips.

The Grotto

Canadian Bacon, thinly sliced Ribeye & pepperoni on a locally baked hoagie roll.

The Italian

Capicola, Salami & Ham on a locally baked hoagie roll.

Ham & Cheese

Fresh Italian roll filled with freshly sliced ham, our legendary cheese blend, and finished with our specially seasoned greens.

The Grinder in the Good Ole Days

The grinder isn't a common term the farther south you travel, mainly because they are most popular in the New England area. There are also many rumors about where the terminology and name came from for this sandwich. Some say it's because the dock workers that ate the sandwich were called "grinders", while other say it's because the bread was so hard that you had to grind it to get a bite.

Grinders are different than their counterparts in that they can be served hot or cold, and generally, are served with meatballs or chicken breasts instead of the cold cuts that you'll find on a hoagie.

Grinders at Casablanca

We've got two delicious grinders at Casablanca that will be a perfect way to end your evening, start your weekend, or really just any meal you can get away and come down to the best bar at the Lake of the Ozarks!

The Kendra

Peppers, fresh mushrooms, onions, roasted garlic, Roma tomato slices, artichoke hearts, black olives, pizza sauce & our five cheese blend on a fresh baked Italian bun.

The Meat A Ball

House-made meatballs covered in our house pizza sauce & cheese blend served on a fresh Italian roll.

Dining at the Best Restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks

Casablanca has both of these delicious sandwiches on our menu, and we look forward to serving you when you come out for a meal. Not only do we have great sandwiches, but we also boast of delicious pizzas, burgers and more. Fun Facts About Casablanca

Casablanca resides in one of the oldest buildings on the Bagnell Dam Strip. Because of that, it's filled with fun facts, lots of history, and incredibly fun moments. We can't tell you how many thousands of people have been through our doors, and the thousands and thousands of memories that have been made within our vintage walls - but we CAN tell you about some fun facts about our restaurant, the history behind it, and more!

Casablanca History

The Casablanca building was built in 1928. When it was first opened, it was actually the first Lake Ozark Post Office and not the bar you've come to love. When the prohibition ended in 1933, Casablanca was born. The Casablanca bar remained for the next 65 years, serving vacationers, guests, and locals alike the entire time. In 1998, Casablanca was then sold and renamed to Slick's Biker Bar. It's no secret that bikers still love our bar, and being located on the Bagnell Dam Strip definitely helps with that. Every month, Hot Summer Nights comes cruising around, and every year, the Lake Ozark BikeFest comes rolling through.
Eddie & Sharon

In 2003 the building was bought back to a prior Casablanca customer and renames back to Casablanca. Just one short year later in 2004, our very loved Eddie Jordan bought the bar and ran it until 2012. In 2012, the Brick Brothers purchased the building from Eddie on New Year's Eve evening while having a drink with Eddie.

The Brick Brothers have been managing your favorite Lake of the Ozarks restaurant, and since have remodeled the basement and turned it into Casagrotto. Eddie played a HUGE role in our restaurant's history, and it is with great sadness that we say he left this world in January 2017.

Fun Facts About Your Lake of the Ozarks Bar

Any building that has been through as much as our will have some fun facts! Check out these CRAZY things about our restaurant at the Lake of the Ozarks.

1. The basement was a speakeasy during prohibition.

4. In the 1930's Bonnie and Clyde were known to frequent this establishment.
